Discovery Connections Helps Troubled Teens After Others Have Failed.
At Discovery Connections, we understand that there is more to each teen's story than the worst parts. We believe each teen has a complex life story and there are many reasons why they might need additional help. We work hard to find the root of the problem & get teens the support & tools they need. Only then can they heal.
Teens come to Discovery Connections when other options have been exhausted. Many teens come to internalize the idea that they are beyond help. We give students all the support they need to succeed. We do not believe that anyone is beyond help.
A Smaller Community-Based Approach is The Most Effective.
Teens who have failed to thrive at multiple other residential treatment programs may find help at Discovery Connections. The small, community-based approach allows boys to find success.
Through evidence-based research, Discovery Connections has found the smaller milieu to be the most effective way to treat this type of student. The smaller community enables the Clinical, Academic, Residential, and Experiential departments to be more tailored to the student's individual needs. Each of the departments within Discovery Connections shares the same goal—reuniting teens with their families. To achieve this goal, departments work together to heal and thrive.
Positive Peer Culture Helps Improve Teen Behavior.
Discovery Connections uses a positive peer culture (PPC). This means that students hold each other responsible for upholding shared values. Teens who have lost their sense of themselves find role models in other teens, who are all working toward the values of self-worth, dignity, and caring for each other.
The positive peer culture creates a community based on strong relationships. At the heart of the positive peer culture are peer mentors. Peer mentors are young men who understand the program and the values on which it is based. They help new students to understand that destructive behaviors are not tolerated in this community.
Relationship And Community-Based Care Provides Support.
In addition to peer support, trained staff, called Mentors, act as guides as they help to ensure that each student is applying himself. Mentors are carefully selected and trained.
As students begin to re-engage in the treatment process, they begin to take steps to prepare for their future. They take part in career exploration and community service. Exposure to life after therapy helps teens see the bigger picture and find themselves within it.
Community service helps boys develop compassion and empathy. Each student is required to participate in a leadership-based emphasis. Participation helps to solidify the new beliefs that he has begun to adopt during treatment. These activities enhance his sense of personal value, self-worth and give him direction.
Discovery Connections Has A Self-Improvement Program That Lives Up To The Name.
The self-improvement program shows teens the value of a positive investment in themselves. Students learn about body image, self-worth, self-esteem, and teen identity.
They learn about food choices, portion sizes, nutrition, physical health, and overall health awareness. Most young men gravitate to the physical health portion of this program.
Exercise has been shown to improve your mood and decrease feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress. Regular exercise helps people relax and sleep better. Also, most students gain self-esteem. Who does not like to look at themselves in the mirror when they begin to look better?
